Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

  Feb. 19, 2025

John 13:8-17

. . . 8 “No!” Peter said. “You will never wash my feet!” Jesus replied, “Unless I wash you, you won’t have a place with me.” 9 Simon Peter said, “Lord, not only my feet but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus responded, “Those who have bathed need only to have their feet washed, because they are completely clean. You disciples are clean, but not every one of you.” 11 He knew who would betray him. That’s why he said, “Not every one of you is clean.” 12 After he washed the disciples’ feet, he put on his robes and returned to his place at the table. He said to them, “Do you know what I’ve done for you? 13 You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you speak correctly, because I am. 14 If I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you too must wash each other’s feet. 15 I have given you an example: Just as I have done, you also must do. 16 I assure you, servants aren’t greater than their master, nor are those who are sent greater than the one who sent them. 17 Since you know these things, you will be happy if you do them.

Good Morning. Make me a servant! Humble and meek!

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you! During my young adult life, I was a manager for McDonald’s. It was so interesting to watch our upper management people jump in and work alongside us when we were very busy. They couldn’t wait to don an apron and flip hamburgers.

They had worked hard to become an executive, but they never forgot where they came from. In my last year as a manager, I saw a new breed of executives. Those who earned their position because of a piece of paper: aka a business degree.

These new executives had never worked in the trenches and knew nothing about the things that made McDonald’s a household name. If they were visiting our restaurant, and we got busy, they would sit writing notes in their notebooks. Their notes often addressed all the mistakes we made during the rush.

They exemplified the masters who believed they were greater than the lowly hamburger flippers. Jesus calls us to humble ourselves and push up our sleeves as we work together to bring the light of Christ to all who are in need. We should never be too good to get dirty and rub elbows with those the world sees as lowly.

Loving Lord, Maker of all things! You love us! Jesus taught us to work together to gather all who are lost. Nudge us forward when we want to stand watching others do the work. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: We find happiness in serving others.

Don’t be afraid to get dirty! Pastor Liz
