Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
February 24, 2026
1 John 5:13-15
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of God’s Son so that you can know that you have eternal life. 14 This is the confidence that we have in our relationship with God: If we ask for anything in agreement with his will, he listens to us. 15 If we know that he listens to whatever we ask, we know that we have received what we asked from him.
Good Morning! I know that my redeemer lives!
Do you not know? Have you not heard? John uses the word "know" frequently, emphasizing that believers can have objective certainty of their relationship with God, rather than relying on shifting emotions.
When we say, “I think that everything will be okay.” We are leaving room for uncertainties that may arise. This is a weak statement because you have an out when everything falls apart. In contrast, saying, “I know that everything will be okay,” evokes confidence and certainty, and is therefore a strong statement with no escape clause.
I love watching the Olympics. My longtime favorite is figure skating. Over the years, I have held my breath watching skaters who I worry might fall. I want to give them all my strength from across the airwaves. Then there are those extraordinary times when a skater is “in the zone,” and I watch an amazing story build on the ice before my eyes. In those moments, the skater knows that everything will be okay, and suddenly, the jumps, twists, and turns happen effortlessly, and the skater convinces everyone to believe.
Within our relationship with God, we pray, worship, read Scripture, and sing songs of praise to build our faith. A faith that does not waver when adversity comes (and it will come). “I know whom I have believed and have persuaded that He is able to keep that which I’ve committed unto Him against that day.”
When we know God, we can let go of our worries and live into every moment, every day.
God of Wisdom, you bless us abundantly! We think we believe! Help us know! Thank you. We love you. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.
Thought for the day: Know that God will prevail in all things!
Do you not know? God loves you! Pastor Liz
