Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

  March 8, 2025

Matthew 14:27-33

27 Just then, Jesus spoke to them, “Be encouraged! It’s me. Don’t be afraid.” 28 Peter replied, “Lord, if it’s you, order me to come to you on the water.” 29 And Jesus said, “Come.” Then Peter got out of the boat and was walking on the water toward Jesus. 30 But when Peter saw the strong wind, he became frightened. As he began to sink, he shouted, “Lord, rescue me!” 31 Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him, saying, “You man of weak faith! Why did you begin to have doubts?” 32 When they got into the boat, the wind settled down. 33 Then those in the boat worshipped Jesus and said, “You must be God’s Son!”

Good Morning. Stand up and bless the Lord, O my soul!

Have you ever started something new: a project, a job, a lifestyle change? Initially, we’re excited and ready to try whatever it takes to get it done. We totally commit ourselves and believe that we are going to make this work.

We might have a few minor issues, but we work through them and continue with confidence. Then we have a big bump or unexpected challenge and doubt, even if only for a moment, and things start to fall apart. Sometimes, we recover independently, but we often need others to help us overcome our problems.

Our faith journey follows a similar path. When we first accept Christ, we are excited, like Peter stepping outside the boat, and see ourselves working toward a new life. We read the Bible, attend worship, pray regularly, and spend time with God. Everything is great! We face a minor challenge or two and waver a little but remain steadfast in our journey.

Then we come face-to-face with a big obstacle, and, like Peter, doubts creep in. We forget to read our Bible, attend worship, spend time with God, or even pray. We are filled with fear, and as we sink into the abyss, we shout, “Lord, rescue me!”

Jesus is always there to reach out and grab us when we call to him. Praise be to God. Our fears weaken as our faith grows stronger.

Loving Lord, Maker of all things! You love us! We are weak, but you are strong. Thank you for rescuing us!  We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: We can overcome our fears through Christ.
