Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
March 21, 2025
Matthew 7:13-14
13 “Go in through the narrow gate. The gate that leads to destruction is broad and the road wide, so many people enter through it. 14 But the gate that leads to life is narrow and the road difficult, so few people find it.
Good Morning. Jesus said, “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved”
Have you noticed that it is easy to travel with the crowd when in a busy place? Everyone moves as a group and obstacles are pushed down before you get there. If you try to turn and go the opposite way, it is almost impossible to move forward.
I see two problems in this idea. First, do we know where the crowd is leading us? Second, there is the pushing down of obstacles. Is the mob trampling whatever it encounters: flowers, insects, gates, or what about the least of these? Is the noise and commotion so great that we can’t hear (or maybe we don’t want to hear) the cries of the needy?
Imagine a herd of large animals moving across the land. They are powerful and in the surge of movement, the path they swath is laid barren. The weak fall and are left behind in a heap of brokenness.
Now apply that to us, God’s children. Are we part of the mass of people moving forward or upward without regard to the cost? Sadly, I see the people Jesus came to save left in the wake of the expanding crowd pushing its way to death and destruction.
We should be like the salmon, pushing upstream to the place we are born to spawn. Our road is filled with challenges and we will have doubts, but Jesus guides and supports us along the way. Choose the narrow path and be saved!
Loving Lord, Maker of all things! Empower us that we may push toward the narrow gate. Open our hearts so that we will help others along our journey. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Trust in the Lord and you will find your way!
Head toward the light! Pastor Liz
