Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
April 1, 2025
Exodus 3:1-4
1 Moses was taking care of the flock for his father-in-law Jethro, Midian’s priest. He led his flock out to the edge of the desert, and he came to God’s mountain called Horeb. 2 The LORD’s messenger appeared to him in a flame of fire in the middle of a bush. Moses saw that the bush was in flames, but it didn’t burn up. 3 Then Moses said to himself, Let me check out this amazing sight and find out why the bush isn’t burning up. 4 When the LORD saw that he was coming to look, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” Moses said, “I’m here.”
Good Morning. God blesses us each day!
One of my favorite things about early morning walks is finding unexpected blessings! Each season brings its own treasures for us to find, but treasures are only found by the seekers. When a burst of sunshine immediately follows clouds and rain, what do you do? You go and look for the rainbow!
Remember when you couldn’t wait to splash in the puddles following summer rain? How about catching that first snowflake on your tongue? Of course, what fun it is to look for the most colorful leaves in the fall? God often speaks to the child living within us. As adults, we become consumed in the serious side of life and sometimes miss these special gifts.
In this passage, Moses stumbles upon a burning bush filled with flames, yet it is not consumed by the fire. He thinks, “Hmmm, I should check this out!” Of course, it is not random for anyone to find; God is working to capture Moses's attention. I wonder what would have happened if Moses had just chosen to continue tending his flock and ignore the bush.
Do we miss signs from God because we’re too busy working or being consumed by the drudgery of life? How many of you have ever driven out into the country at night in search of the unexpected light in the sky? My mom and I did this many times. It was usually rotating spotlights announcing a store opening or special event, but we needed to know, so off we would go.
In the busy, chaotic lives we lead, would we drop everything and go in search of the light that marked the birth of a baby, or would we go about our normal business? Remember, treasures are only found by those who seek them.
Loving Lord, Maker of all things! Nudge us when we forget to look for your treasures. Unleash the inner child within us. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Pause and look for signs of God today!
Be a seeker! Pastor Liz
