Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
April 19, 2023
Psalm 36:5-9
5 But your loyal love, LORD, extends to the skies; your faithfulness reaches the clouds. 6 Your righteousness is like the strongest mountains; your justice is like the deepest sea. LORD, you save both humans and animals. 7 Your faithful love is priceless, God! Humanity finds refuge in the shadow of your wings. 8 They feast on the bounty of your house; you let them drink from your river of pure joy. 9 Within you is the spring of life. In your light, we see light.
Good Morning, All things bright and beautiful. The Lord God made them all.
Do you ever find yourself looking for a safe place? When I was a child, I found solitude in my bedroom sometimes, but part of what made that space feel safe was knowing that my parents were there to protect me. They weren’t in the room with me, but they were there.
As adults, maybe we are the basis of someone else’s safe place. When I feel overwhelmed, I find myself wanting to hear the words “Everything is going to be okay.” These words bring this sense of comfort long rooted in my childhood. I remember being held and hearing those words. Suddenly, I am filled with a sense of calm and peace.
Many parts of our lives are practices or a model of life to help us understand life with God. Through these experiences, we prepare to be in a relationship with God. God, our creator, Father, and Mother, is always with us. It’s like feeling the protection of our parents even when they are in a different room. Because they are in the house with us, we feel safe. When we believe in God, God is in our “house” and is ready to protect us when we call out.
1 “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” 3 Surely, he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. Psalm 91
God is waiting with open arms for all who call. God, our protector, is the source of peace, joy, love, and hope. God loves us and wants to provide shelter for us. We, who are weary, need to let go of our anxiety and accept God’s offer. God promises us! Everything is going to be okay! Amen!
Blessed God, We thank you for Your blessings. Thank you for being our shelter. During our greatest storms, You stand firm and hold us. Thank You! In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: I can take refuge in Christ when I am afraid.
Let go of your anxiety! Pastor Liz
