Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

Ephesians 2:4-10      

4 - 5 However, God is rich in mercy. He brought us to life with Christ while we were dead as a result of those things that we did wrong. He did this because of the great love that he has for us. You are saved by God’s grace! 6 And God raised us up and seated us in the heavens with Christ Jesus. 7 God did this to show future generations the greatness of his grace by the goodness that God has shown us in Christ Jesus. 8 You are saved by God’s grace because of your faith. This salvation is God’s gift. It’s not something you possessed. 9 It’s not something you did that you can be proud of. 10 Instead, we are God’s accomplishment, created in Christ Jesus to do good things. God planned for these good things to be the way that we live our lives.

Good Morning! God’s grace saves us!

We are God’s accomplishment, created in Christ Jesus to do good things! As I peer into the foggy abyss this morning, I am reminded that God reveals his plans for us slowly. I believe that if we were shown the whole picture at once, we would be unable to comprehend what we are to become. 

Think of a mathematician staring at a board filled with numbers, symbols, and equations. The one who wrote it out knows what it is, but for the rest of us, we look and shake our heads. The mathematician may have solved one of the greatest problems of society, but it looks like gibberish to us because we have no context through which to analyze his “creation.”

Likewise, we lack the knowledge and perspective to make sense of God’s eternal plan, so God reveals small glimpses in a way that we can grow into the role God created for us. God provides the scaffolding to which we may cling when we start feeling shaky or unsure of our next steps. 

Loving Lord, Maker of all things! You created us in your image so that we might love one another. We struggle, but you support us when we falter. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: God is Creator. Jesus is Light! The Holy Spirit is Energy!
