Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
May 11, 2025
Psalm 8:1-9
1 LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name throughout the earth! You made your glory higher than heaven! 2 From the mouths of nursing babies you have laid a strong foundation because of your foes, in order to stop vengeful enemies. 3 When I look up at your skies, at what your fingers made the moon and the stars that you set firmly in place 4 what are human beings that you think about them; what are human beings that you pay attention to them? 5 You’ve made them only slightly less than divine, crowning them with glory and grandeur. 6 You’ve let them rule over your handiwork, putting everything under their feet 7 all sheep and all cattle, the wild animals too, 8 the birds in the sky, the fish of the ocean, everything that travels the pathways of the sea. 9 LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name throughout the earth!
Good Morning! O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name!
God is our creator! Within us, God’s children, there are many characteristics. Like our creator, we have the capacity to be mothers, fathers, children, siblings, grandparents, uncles, aunts . . . The list is endless. Beyond our familial roles, there are infinite parts we can play.
Today, we celebrate Mother’s Day. Of course, we each have birth mothers, but there are so many who mother us throughout our lives. I do not say this to diminish the role of being a birth mother. I believe that understanding the mothering quality within each of us expands the importance of motherhood.
God mothers us when we need to be nurtured by the love and compassion that is revealed when new life begins. By considering God’s mothering aspect, we can see that all, regardless of gender, have the capacity to mother within them.
When you watch little children at play, you see them mothering everything that is before them. They mother toys, bugs, plants, and, of course, other children. It’s amazing to watch them take another child under their wings and care for them.
On this day of celebration, may we all embrace the capacity of mothering that lies within us.
Loving Lord, Maker of all things! Thank you for mothering us as you provide for our development. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Mother one another!
Happy Mother’s Day! Pastor Liz
