Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
May 23, 2025
Mark 19:19-24
19 Jesus answered them, “You faithless generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I put up with you? Bring him to me.” 20 They brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a fit. He fell on the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. 21 Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been going on?” He said, “Since he was a child. 22 It has often thrown him into a fire or into water trying to kill him. If you can do anything, help us! Show us compassion!” 23 Jesus said to him, “‘If you can do anything’? All things are possible for the one who has faith.” 24 At that the boy’s father cried out, “I have faith; help my lack of faith!”
Good Morning! Oh God, help our lack of faith!
We enter into most situations in good faith! We believe that we will receive that which is promised. When we hire someone to do a job, we expect they will do the job in a satisfactory manner. When we purchase a car or house, we have implied expectations that it is in good working order and will serve our needs.
Inevitably, our faith is shattered when our worker fails to do the job for which they are hired, or the car we purchased is deemed a lemon. These situations run the risk of failure and disappointment because all involved are humans. Humans are flawed, and therefore, the things humans make and do are potentially flawed.
We tend to apply these same criteria to God. We enter a faithful relationship with God. At first, things go well. We grow into our faith by praying, praising, worshipping, and reading the Bible. Then, we encounter our first obstacle, and when things don’t go well, we question our faith and we question God. After all, we have been let down so many times before in our interactions with others. Why would this situation be any different?
It is different because this is God, and God is perfection! The problem arises because of our expectations. Unlike our human encounters, God operates in a different dimension than we do. Just because God’s solutions and answers don’t always align with our desired results doesn’t mean that God is not working within and around us.
All things are possible for the one who has faith.” 24 At that the boy’s father cried out, “I have faith; help my lack of faith!”
The boy’s father states what we are sometimes too proud to say, “Help my lack of faith!” We must recognize our innate weakness, let go of preconceptions, and trust God, who makes everything perfect.
Loving Lord, Maker of all things! We say we believe, yet we struggle to trust you in all things. Help us in our unbelief! Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Everything is possible for the one who believes.
“I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”! Pastor Liz
