Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
June 25, 2024
Psalm 40:1-5
1 I put all my hope in the LORD. He leaned down to me; he listened to my cry for help. 2 He lifted me out of the pit of death, out of the mud and filth, and set my feet on solid rock. He steadied my legs. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise for our God. Many people will learn of this and be amazed; they will trust the LORD. 4 Those who put their trust in the LORD, who pay no attention to the proud or to those who follow lies, are truly happy! 5 You, LORD my God! You’ve done so many things, your wonderful deeds and your plans for us no one can compare with you! If I were to proclaim and talk about all of them, they would be too numerous to count!
Good Morning! Our God is an awesome God!
We put all our hope in the Lord! David, the youngest son of Jesse, who was anointed to be the king of Israel while still a young boy, has just come through an exile in the wilderness, and now he is praising God for leading him through his trials. When we think of David, we can see a reflection of our own journey with God.
Imagine if you were in his place. Would you have dreams of how wonderful your life would be? I doubt if you would expect all of the mess that David encountered. Of course, much of this mess was self-inflicted, and the rest can be assigned to those who longed for his power.
I appreciate the Psalms because we see David at his best when he praises God and at his worst when he is angry with God. If we are honest, our faith journey resembles David’s. Of course, our challenges and obstacles are not the same, but they cause us anger as they caused David.
I have talked with those who questioned whether they could argue with God. I believe that every truthful relationship reaches a point when an argument erupts. What happens next, not the argument, is the most important part. Can we reach a point of love and forgiveness after the disagreement? The most important thing is to establish a relationship with God and be your authentic self. God knows who you are, don’t try to hide your feelings.
Creator God, Thank you for this beautiful gift of life. Even when we don’t understand, we love you. Thank you for pulling us from the pits in which we are mired. We thank you! In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: God’s compassion for us inspires us to have compassion for others.
