Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
July 10, 2024
Psalm 71:17-21
17 You’ve taught me since my youth, God, and I’m still proclaiming your wondrous deeds! 18 So, even in my old age with gray hair, don’t abandon me, God! Not until I tell generations about your mighty arm, tell all who are yet to come about your strength, 19 and about your ultimate righteousness, God, because you’ve done awesome things! Who can compare to you, God? 20 You, who have shown me many troubles and calamities, will revive me once more. From the depths of the earth, you will raise me up one more time. 21 Please increase my honor and comfort me all around.
Good Morning! O God, you are my God!
As we push into our later years, we begin observing the world through a different lens. We are guided by the knowledge and wisdom we have acquired, but we are also stimied by the cynicism that taints our perceptions. Sometimes we lower our expectations to reduce our potential disappointment.
In this passage, David is in his later years, and he is asking God not to abandon him as he teeters between his doubts (I still have work to do) and his faith (you will raise me up one more time). Like David, we know we have wisdom to share, but we fear the unknowns that accompany aging.
David's journey teaches us to navigate through our doubts and return to our faith, which is the bedrock of our identity. This process is crucial in maintaining a balance between the tangible realities we perceive and the intangible faith we hold dear.
The prophet Isaiah shares, “The Lord said, “Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” - Isaiah 46:4 (NIV)
God of Compassion, Thank you for this beautiful gift of life. When we are struggling, you are there to comfort and protect us. We thank you! In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: When we have doubts, lean on your faith for support.
God accompanies us on our journey! Pastor Liz
