Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
July 24, 2025
Matthew 6:31-34
31 Therefore, don’t worry and say, ‘What are we going to eat?’ or ‘What are we going to drink?’ or ‘What are we going to wear?’ 32 Gentiles long for all these things. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 Instead, desire first and foremost God’s kingdom and God’s righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore, stop worrying about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Good Morning! Oh, what a beautiful day!
Many people enjoy creating to-do lists, while others adhere to a daily routine that allows them to accomplish all their tasks on a regular schedule. While the euphoria of checking or crossing off items is beneficial, that might not be the most efficient way to achieve success.
One problem is that lists can be overwhelming, and so we move into avoidance mode. We believe that if we don’t look at the list, then we’re not obligated to complete it. Another problem with task-oriented lists or routines is arranging the tasks in the correct order for completion.
Many prefer to complete the quick and easy tasks first, then tackle the tougher ones. It is essential to recognize when you are in your optimal “brain” state. If you are a morning person like me, you know that I need to do the things that require the most thinking early in the day because that is when all your pistons are firing at their peak. If you spend that precious time on lesser tasks, then you won't have the energy or capacity to accomplish the more challenging ones.
Finally, there is worry. 27 Who among you, by worrying, can add a single moment to your life? Do you remember a time when you were so worried about the items on your list that worry was the only thing you got done? Worry robs us of our time and energy, which could be better spent loving and serving one another.
When we give our worries to God, we can happily cross them off our list and feel the renewal of optimism that takes their place. It’s a great day when I begin with God and pass off those things that are not my burdens to bear. Imagine all that you can accomplish when you approach your day with joy!
Giving Lord, you bless us abundantly! Despite our blessings and assurances from you, we still find things that cause us concern. Remind us to let go of these things and focus on living our lives with joy. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Lay your burdens down at the foot of the cross!
