Liz’s Morning Devotional based upon Upper Room

July 28, 2021

Read Genesis 19:15-26

15 When dawn broke, the messengers urged Lot, “Get up and take your wife and your two daughters who are here so that you are not swept away because of the evil in this city.” 16 He hesitated, but because the LORD intended to save him, the men grabbed him, his wife, and two daughters by the hand, took him out, and left him outside the city. 17 After getting them out, the men said, “Save your lives! Don’t look back! And don’t stay in the valley. Escape to the mountains so that you are not swept away.” 18 But Lot said to them, “No, my lords, please. 19 You’ve done me a favor and have been so kind to save my life. But I can’t escape to the mountains since the catastrophe might overtake me there and I’d die. 20 This city here is close enough to flee to, and it’s small. It’s small, right? Let me escape there, and my life will be saved.” 21 He said to Lot, “I’ll do this for you as well; I won’t overthrow the city that you have described. 22 Hurry! Escape to it! I can’t do anything until you get there.” That is why the name of the city is Zoar. 23 As the sun rose over the earth, Lot arrived in Zoar; 24 and the LORD rained down burning asphalt from the skies onto Sodom and Gomorrah. 25 The LORD destroyed these cities, the entire valley, everyone who lived in the cities, and all of the fertile land’s vegetation. 26 When Lot’s wife looked back, she turned into a pillar of salt.

Good Morning! Trust in God’s calling.

Listening to God is easy when His plan seems to mesh with our own idea, but it is much more difficult when we have to leave behind things that seem important to us. Think of a rich person who makes the decision to sell everything he owns, donates the proceeds to the poor, and follows Christ. This sounds great! Imagine, at some point, this person looks around at other people who have the very things that he sold and he becomes jealous or envious of them and their possessions. What if you were the rich person in the story?

The decision to follow Christ represents a powerful moment in a person’s life. We are called to fully commit to the teachings of Christ including leaving behind those earthly possessions to which we are shackled. Christ shares so many stories to help us understand that God will provide us with all that we need like the Israelites wandering in the desert, the feeding of the thousands with fishes and loaves, and Christ sending out the disciples with only the clothes on their backs to share the Good News.

With each step forward we take to our life in Christ, we must trust God in all things. Because we are all afflicted by our human frailty, this is hard. We want to straddle the fence with one foot rooted in Christ while the other foot remains planted in what our earthly world values as important. Just as Herod learned when he was confronted by this decision, we must choose. We can’t have it both ways. I choose the joy of Christ as my cornerstone and I place my life in the hands of God. I know that I may stumble on fall along the way, but I also know that God will be there with me to love and protect me.

Loving God, Thank You for loving us. How can we give up those things that we have acquired and trust that You will provide for us? This is hard for us, yet You call us to drop our nets and follow you. Thank you for believing that we are worth the effort it takes to teach us to believe and trust You in all things. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: With God, I can go forward confidently.
