Morning Devotional 080823 Shelter From the Storm

Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

August 8, 2023

Psalm 62:5-8

5 Oh, I must find rest in God only, because my hope comes from him! 6 Only God is my rock and my salvation my stronghold!—I will not be shaken. 7 My deliverance and glory depend on God. God is my strong rock. My refuge is in God. 8 All you people: Trust in him at all times! Pour out your hearts before him! God is our refuge! Selah

Good Morning; Enjoy the calm that follows the storm.

Never lose hope, for hope comes from God! Yesterday afternoon’s storm was interesting. We had many warnings of the potential wind and rain coming our way. I walked through my yard and garden and prepared for the possibility of strong winds. I took down my hanging plants and placed them on the ground, and I put away some that could be easily tossed around in the storm. Then I went inside and watched from within the safety of my home.

The winds and rain came, but we were fortunate not to get the full measure of wind that was predicted. Because I had heeded the warnings, I felt safe watching as the storm came. After the initial front, I looked out my window and saw a beautiful rainbow filling the sky. About an hour later, the big rain arrived, watering our thirsty lawns and gardens.

Our storms of life often mimic weather patterns. Sometimes we get many warnings and time to prepare, but other times those unexpected storms pop up. How do we prepare for these storms? We must develop a relationship with God, our shelter, by reading the Bible, talking, and praying to God. By preparing my soul, I can remove my fears and anxiety that can be blown by the winds and trampled by the rain. In times of storm, I can retreat to my shelter in God and find the strength we have prepared together.

6 Only God is my rock and my salvation my stronghold!

Loving God, We thank you! We face so many storms and troubles. By your grace, you wait for us to come and give ourselves to you. Thank you! In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

Prepare Your Shelter! Pastor Liz
