Matthew 11:1-5

1 When Jesus finished teaching his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities. 2 Now when John heard in prison about the things the Christ was doing, he sent word by his disciples to Jesus, asking, 3 “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” 4 Jesus responded, “Go, report to John what you hear and see. 5 Those who were blind are able to see. Those who were crippled are walking. People with skin diseases are cleansed. Those who were deaf now hear. Those who were dead are raised up. The poor have good news proclaimed to them.

Good Morning! Rejoice! Rejoice! Again, I say Rejoice!

Jesus came to save us from evil and ourselves. For generations, the Jewish people had awaited the coming of the Messiah, and they had their own expectations of what the Messiah would do, and Jesus wasn’t acting the way they expected.

The stories of earthly kings like David showed strong leaders who conquered any who held them captive. The kings lived lavish lives in fancy palaces. Even when the kings showed their weaknesses, the Lord forgave them and helped them protect the people.

Jesus showed none of these tendencies. He avoided the leaders who would pronounce him the king and build him a palace. In fact, he hung out with the lowest of the low and ate with sinners. He seemed to be from God because of the miraculous signs he performed, but is he really the long-awaited Messiah?

Jesus came to save us by teaching us a new way to live. He knew that only his suffering, death, and resurrection would make our redemption possible.

Faithful God, Thank you for creating us. Thank you for loving us. You sent your only son to save us. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: Jesus offers us a new way.

Let Jesus open your heart! Pastor Liz
