Read Lamentations 3:25-33

25 The LORD is good to those who hope in him, to the person who seeks him. 26 It’s good to wait in silence for the LORD’s deliverance. 27 It’s good for a man to carry a yoke in his youth. 28 He should sit alone and be silent when God lays it on him. 29 He should put his mouth in the dirt—perhaps there is hope. 30 He should offer his cheek for a blow; he should be filled with shame. 31 My Lord definitely won’t reject forever. 32 Although he has caused grief, he will show compassion in measure with his covenant loyalty. 33 He definitely doesn’t enjoy affliction, making humans suffer.

Good Morning! Take time to be holy!

I will admit that reading Jeremiah’s words in Lamentations is difficult for me. As I prayed and thought this morning, I studied the context of what came before and after this section. Jeremiah was in a time of great despair and the two previous chapters were reflections of his struggles during which he felt rejected by God. In chapter 3, we start to see glimpses of light when he starts to regain his hope.

Let’s explore the idea of waiting in silence. Can you remember a time when you were called out because you did something wrong? The first thing that we often want to do is tell our side of the story and offer excuses. We do this even when we know that we were wrong, and we don’t want to listen to anyone else. When we are sent to our rooms, we continue to plead our case (even though we are alone). Depending upon our conviction, it may take a while, but eventually we start to let the words of the opposition come into our self-reflection. We start to listen quietly and consider all sides of the story and accept that we were in the wrong. Once we admit our wrong, we can begin the process of healing.

Our relationship with God can be like this. We are sinners and we make poor choices. Sometimes we even think that we can hide our sins from God, our Creator, and if we make enough noise we won’t be able to hear God calling to us. God continues to patiently call to us until we are ready to be quiet and listen. God is waiting for us with open arms to help us process our sinful ways so that we can repair the wrongs we have inflicted upon others. Even in our darkest moments, God is with us waiting for us to call out to him and to restore our hope.

Loving God, Thank You for loving us. You created us and gave us free will. We make poor choices and sin against you and our neighbors. We create excuses to cover our wrongdoings, but through You we will find our way. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: God is always with us.
