Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
August 28, 2025
Psalm 19:7-14
7 The LORD’s Instruction is perfect, reviving one’s very being. The LORD’s laws are faithful, making naive people wise. 8 The LORD’s regulations are right, gladdening the heart. The LORD’s commands are pure, giving light to the eyes. 9 Honoring the LORD is correct, lasting forever. The LORD’s judgments are true. All of these are righteous! 10 They are more desirable than gold than tons of pure gold! They are sweeter than honey even dripping off the honeycomb! 11 No doubt about it: your servant is enlightened by them; there is great reward in keeping them. 12 But can anyone know what they’ve accidentally done wrong? Clear me of any unknown sin 13 and save your servant from willful sins. Don’t let them rule me. Then I’ll be completely blameless; I’ll be innocent of great wrongdoing. 14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing to you, LORD, my rock and my redeemer.
Good Morning! Our Lord revives our very being!
One of our greatest challenges is not to let our sins rule us. I have noticed that many things in my life come in cycles. We read that in Ecclesiastes 3: There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens. That is certainly recognizable in our broader perspective, but also in the layers that underpin our lives.
Think about those times when everything is going well, and then of course, there are those times when nothing is working as we hope or expect. Let’s apply that idea to our sinfulness. Does one sin beget another one? Perhaps!
If we do one thing we consider a sin and nothing bad happens (or at least, nothing bad of which we are aware), are we more prone to sin again? If so, it would seem to imply that sinfulness could become acceptable in our minds. After all, if no one (including ourselves) is harmed, then isn’t it okay? No! To purposefully sin is to defile all that is holy.
The propensity to sin is within us, and we must come to terms with it, but as Christians, we have repented, been forgiven, and chosen to follow Christ, and we should work to avoid our sinful ways. David also speaks of those unknown sins and asks to be cleansed of them. Each of our actions has consequences, and as such, we might unknowingly sin against one another.
The Good News is that when we humble ourselves before God and repent, God wipes our slate clean. Through God’s forgiveness, we become a new being as we walk with Jesus.
Loving Lord, you bless us abundantly! Fill us with your love so that we may find ways to love, not hurt your children. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: When we feel lost, we can lean on God to find our way.
Let God lead us in righteousness! Pastor Liz
