Liz’s Morning Devotional based upon Upper Room

September 11, 2021

Read Matthew 5:38-42

38 “You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth”. 39 But I say to you that you must not oppose those who want to hurt you. If people slap you on your right cheek, you must turn the left cheek to them as well. 40 When they wish to haul you to court and take your shirt, let them have your coat too. 41 When they force you to go one mile, go with them two. 42 Give to those who ask, and don’t refuse those who wish to borrow from you.

Good Morning! Again I say rejoice!

Before 9/11 became an infamous, historic date, it was a day of celebration in our house. It was Lowell’s birthday. Lowell was never much about big birthday celebrations for himself, but twenty years ago, he made a new birthday wish that stayed with him for all of his years: Dear God, Let nothing bad happen today! As our nation remembers the heroes and the catastrophic losses of 9/11, may we also remember how we were able to overcome the divisions in our country and become reunited with our fellow Americans.

This is my song, O God of all the nations;

A song of peace for lands afar and mine.

O hear my prayer, thou God of all the nations

Myself I give thee, let thy will be done.

When I read today’s passage, I appreciate the tenants that shaped how Lowell lived his life. We often were lacking in the way of finances, but he was quick to give to others from our portion. Whether he gave time, food, shelter, or money, he was willing to take some of himself and give it to anyone who asked. Just as we learn from many of the parables, we must be willing to sacrifice ourselves for the good of others. In giving His life, Christ saved the world. Hallelujah! Amen!

Loving God, Thank You for loving us. Help to become happy givers. When we give to others with love in our hearts, we too are blessed. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: Respond to those in need with love.
