Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
September 11, 2025
2 Corinthians 1:7-10
7 Our hope for you is certain, because we know that as you are partners in suffering, so also you are partners in comfort. 8 Brothers and sisters, we don’t want you to be unaware of the troubles that we went through in Asia. We were weighed down with a load of suffering that was so far beyond our strength that we were afraid we might not survive. 9 It certainly seemed to us as if we had gotten the death penalty. This was so that we would have confidence in God, who raises the dead, instead of ourselves. 10 God rescued us from a terrible death, and he will rescue us. We have set our hope on him that he will rescue us again,
Good Morning! God rescues us from our sorrow!
A day that will live in infamy! FDR coined this phrase as we responded to the atrocious attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Today is another day that lives in infamy. In my lifetime, other days have received the same label. Sadly, the list of such events is growing. We recognize those national and global worst days, but each of us has our personal days of infamy as well. Each of those days is a day of great sorrow.
In such times, our faith in God is our best refuge from the horror that fills the airwaves. God does not cause such events. They are the result of free will, which God grants to all. Sometimes we make choices that hurt others, but oftentimes others make choices that hurt us. There are also the random acts that trigger a ripple of events, causing harm in unintended ways.
This was so that we would have confidence in God, who raises the dead, instead of ourselves. 10 God rescued us from a terrible death, and he will rescue us. We have set our hope on him that he will rescue us again,
In our moments of deepest sorrow, God is with us to comfort us. We place our hope in Christ that God will rescue us once again from our human attempts to “rule” the world. The greatest [sic] day that continues to live in infamy is the day Jesus was crucified for our sins. After such horror, God raised Jesus from the dead and rescued humanity from itself. From an old Gospel hymn, “This our song of victory: Jesus saves! Jesus saves!”
Loving Lord, you bless us abundantly! You bless us and save us from our days that live in infamy. May our days of glory outshine our days of infamy. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: God can heal our wounds, lessen our sorrow, and lift us up.
Despite the horror we create, God rescues us! Pastor Liz
