Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
September 12, 2024
John 1:1-9
1 In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. 2 The Word was with God in the beginning. 3 Everything came into being through the Word, and without the Word nothing came into being. What came into being 4 through the Word was life, In the Word was life and the life was the light for all people. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness doesn’t extinguish the light. 6 A man named John was sent from God. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning the light, so that through him everyone would believe in the light. 8 He himself wasn’t the light, but his mission was to testify concerning the light. 9 The true light that shines on all people was coming into the world.
Good Morning! Jesus is the light of the world!
I love to travel, but one of the pitfalls is waking up in the dark in a strange place. In those moments, I feel lost until my brain catches up and remembers where I am. In my own house, I can comfortably traverse my bedroom in total darkness because I’ve done it so many times before that my brain can lead me around the obstacles.
Darkness is often equated with fear, while light is with happiness. Harry Potter fans might remember Dumbledore using the deluminator to put out the street lights to mask his arrival. In a later episode, Dumbledore says, "Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light."
What about our spiritual darkness? Just like our physical challenges in finding our way in the dark, when we are in spiritual darkness, we stumble and fall as we encounter each obstacle along our pathway. How do we find our way when we lack the spiritual light of Christ? The light of Christ is waiting within all of God’s children; we must simply ask, and our path will be illuminated.
Christ came to light the way for all who believe in him. Thanks be to God!
Faithful God, Thank you for creating us. You sent your Son to light our paths. Thank you for giving us your unconditional love. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Jesus is the source of our power and light.
Turn on the Light! Pastor Liz
