Morning Devotional 091823 Telling the Stories of Jesus

Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

September 18, 2023

Psalm 3:1-8

1 LORD, I have so many enemies! So many are standing against me. 2 So many are talking about me: “Even God won’t help him.” Selah 3 But you, LORD, are my shield! You are my glory! You are the one who restores me. 4 I cry out loud to the LORD, and he answers me from his holy mountain. Selah 5 I lie down, sleep, and wake up because the LORD helps me. 6 I won’t be afraid of thousands of people surrounding me on all sides. 7 Stand up, LORD! Save me, my God! In fact, hit all my enemies on the jaw; shatter the teeth of the wicked! 8 Rescue comes from the LORD! May your blessing be on your people! Selah

Good Morning. Rejoice in the Lord Always!

During my lifetime, I have seen many changes. Certainly, the obvious changes are encompassed in the technology revolution. Information is everywhere. We no longer have to track down a book at the library to find information. We pull out a device and google it. While this is expedient, helpful, and often fascinating, I do miss the adventure of digging through a menagerie of sources looking for my answer. There’s something satisfying about looking through old dusty books on a shelf.

If we move past our concrete changes and look a bit into the societal changes, we find many things. Attitudes shift as the things that were once considered unseemly become commonplace. One of the big elephants in the room is the attitude towards church and God. We are living in a land that knew not Joseph. For thousands of years, the stories of God were told among the families and the communities, and all knew them. Even those who didn’t attend church regularly knew the stories.

Sadly, the stories are being lost in our secular society. There are more who have never heard them than we can imagine. If you ask a group of kindergarteners about David and Goliath, most look at you with no idea what you’re asking, but if you ask them about Spiderman, they can talk for hours. Now, I like Spiderman and the Marvel family, and I can even glean Christian ethics within the stories, but I have the context to make that connection. What about those who don’t? For them, it is a nice story, but that is it.

We must stand tall and walk the walk of Christ. We must tell the stories of Jesus to everyone we meet. Let us bring the little children to Christ. Tell me the stories of Jesus; we long to hear them! Is your Bible one of those dusty books on the shelf?

Loving God, We love you! We get caught up in trying to fit into a secular world. We forget to bring the secular world to You. Forgive us, O Lord. Help us! In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: God is here to help me in every situation.

Tell the stories of Jesus! Pastor Liz
