Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
September 19, 2025
Exodus 4:10-17
10 But Moses said to the LORD, “My Lord, I’ve never been able to speak well, not yesterday, not the day before, and certainly not now since you’ve been talking to your servant. I have a slow mouth and a thick tongue.” 11 Then the LORD said to him, “Who gives people the ability to speak? Who’s responsible for making them unable to speak or hard of hearing, sighted or blind? Isn’t it I, the LORD? 12 Now go! I’ll help you speak, and I’ll teach you what you should say.” 13 But Moses said, “Please, my Lord, just send someone else.” 14 Then the LORD got angry at Moses and said, “What about your brother Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak very well. He’s on his way out to meet you now, and he’s looking forward to seeing you. 15 Speak to him and tell him what he’s supposed to say. I’ll help both of you speak, and I’ll teach both of you what to do. 16 Aaron will speak for you to the people. He’ll be a spokesperson for you, and you will be like God for him. 17 Take this shepherd’s rod with you too so that you can do the signs.”
Good Morning! All good gifts come from heaven above!
As historians looking at the past, we see Moses as a great leader. He boldly demanded that the Pharaoh let God’s people go! He led them across the Red Sea and through the desert to the promised land. We can confidently say that Moses was strong in his faith and served God well!
Verses 10 and 13 of today’s passage show us a different side of Moses. Moses, a man who questions whether God is calling him to speak God’s word because he isn’t a good public speaker, and he simply doubts his ability to do as God asked him to do.
So how do we get from the one who doubts God to one who boldly proclaims God’s Word to the Israelites? God! God is the master designer! God can make what is impossible for man, possible.
“Who gives people the ability to speak? Who’s responsible for making them unable to speak or hard of hearing, sighted or blind? Isn’t it I, the LORD? 12 Now go! I’ll help you speak, and I’ll teach you what you should say.”
There are stories of countless people who doubt their call. Some run away. Some ignore. Others try to rationalize with God, just as Moses did! God doesn’t call someone without providing the tools and support they need to accomplish God’s plan. Answering God’s call doesn’t mean that life will be easy, but that God will be there all the way.
The most amusing part is that God calls us when we least expect it. Moses had “retired” and lived the simple life of a shepherd. Abraham was an old man ready to rest. For my own story, I was a teacher about to retire. God’s time and ways are not our ways. Is God calling you to embark on a new journey in the name of Christ?
Loving Lord, you bless us abundantly! Help us respond when you call us! Let us let go of our doubts and listen to you. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: God provides what we need to obey the call to serve.
God makes all things beautiful in his time! Pastor Liz
