Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
September 23, 2025
Proverbs 2:1-11
1 My son, accept my words and store up my commands. 2 Turn your ear toward wisdom, and stretch your mind toward understanding. 3 Call out for insight, and cry aloud for understanding. 4 Seek it like silver; search for it like hidden treasure. 5 Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, and discover the knowledge of God. 6 The LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. 7 He reserves ability for those with integrity. He is a shield for those who live a blameless life. 8 He protects the paths of justice and guards the way of those who are loyal to him. 9 Then you will understand righteousness and justice, as well as integrity, every good course. 10 Wisdom will enter your mind, and knowledge will fill you with delight. 11 Discretion will guard you; understanding will protect you.
Good Morning! Turn your ear toward wisdom, and stretch your mind toward understanding.
8 He protects the paths of justice and guards the way of those who are loyal to him. 9 Then you will understand righteousness and justice, as well as integrity, every good course. 10 Wisdom will enter your mind, and knowledge will fill you with delight. 11 Discretion will guard you; understanding will protect you.
In times such as these, these are important words. Three hundred years ago, Wesley called for believers to seek justice for all and walk a path of righteousness. He knew that this was hard, then and now, but by God’s grace, we are given the strength to join together and stand up for those who need an extra hand. These words predate Wesley in Micah 6:8
To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
To aid us in our efforts, he shared three simple rules: Do good, do no harm, and attend to the ordinances of God. He felt these rules, which are challenging to maintain for even the best of us, would allow us to stay in love with God. i.e., Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength!
Do good! God will help us when we struggle. Do no harm! Again, God is with us! Attend to the ordinances of God. These ordinances, also known as means of grace, include praying, reading Scripture, Holy Communion, fasting, and worshiping together. When we do these things, we will learn and develop a relationship with God that aids in our efforts to do good and do no harm.
As Jesus told the man who asked what the greatest commandment was, when he recognized the answer, “Go and do likewise!”
Loving Lord, you bless us abundantly! Thank you for listening and guiding us when we struggle. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
