Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
September 26, 2025
Proverbs 8:1-8
1 Doesn’t Wisdom cry out and Understanding shout? 2 Atop the heights along the path, at the crossroads she takes her stand. 3 By the gate before the city, at the entrances, she shouts: 4 I cry out to you, people; my voice goes out to all of humanity. 5 Understand skill, you who are naive. Take this to heart, you fools. 6 Listen, for I speak things that are correct; from my lips comes what is right. 7 My mouth utters the truth; my lips despise wickedness. 8 All the words of my mouth are righteous; nothing in them is twisted or crooked. 9 All of them are straightforward to those who understand, and upright for the knowledgeable. 10 Take my instruction rather than silver, knowledge rather than choice gold. 11 Wisdom is better than pearls; nothing is more delightful than she.
Good Morning! Listen and Learn
God blessed or maybe cursed us with free will. This free will allows us to choose what we do, what we say, and who we listen to. It is innate in most of us to listen to the one who speaks the loudest.
When I arise, God speaks to me through the gentle breeze and the beautiful sky. God’s voice is quiet, and God’s message is simple. Love God and love your neighbors. In contrast to this quietness is the shouting of the world. When you engage with the world, you hear shouting, music blaring, and the noise of traffic and manmade devices.
On the airwaves, there are TV shows that feature hosts arguing and shouting at each other. Even when they agree, it is loud and in your face in its presentation. I recall having students who didn’t notice that the teacher was speaking unless they raised their voice, because that was the environment to which they were accustomed.
The biggest problem when everyone is shouting is that you have to choose the message to which you will listen. Which one wins? The loudest, the boldest, the one filled with hate, or God’s message of love and wisdom.
In the back of my mind resides Psalm 46:10 Be still and know that I am God. I remember reading the Common English Bible translation and reading, “That’s enough! Now know that I am God! At first this seemed harsh, but when I consider all the noise and our own resistance, maybe “That’s enough!” is God’s way to get our attention over all the ambient noise playing in our brains.
Listen! God is speaking!
Loving Lord, you bless us abundantly! We have created a noisy world. Help us hear you when you speak. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Tune in to God’s voice.
