Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
October 6, 2025
Matthew 7:24-27
24 “Everybody who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise builder who built a house on bedrock. 25 The rain fell, the floods came, and the wind blew and beat against that house. It didn’t fall because it was firmly set on bedrock. 26 But everybody who hears these words of mine and doesn’t put them into practice will be like a fool who built a house on sand. 27 The rain fell, the floods came, and the wind blew and beat against that house. It fell and was completely destroyed.”
Good Morning! Embrace your inner child and smile!
I can’t read this passage without singing the VBS song that mirrors it. And the foolish man’s house went “splat” (accompanied by a big hand clap to indicate the splat). We sometimes play off kid songs, but so many implant scripture within us that lasts for a lifetime.
The question we need to ask ourselves is what comes next. The kid’s song tells us that too. So build your house on the Lord, Jesus Christ. (3X), And the blessings will come down. The prayers go up and the blessings come down (3X), so build your life on the Lord.
When we build our lives on earthly things filled with fluff and covered with glitter, our foundation is like those kids' art projects we created in our youth. They stand tall and look good for a bit, but if they get wet, covered in dust, or trampled, they end up in the trash. Likewise, our lives cannot withstand the obstacles and storms that arise if we build them upon a shaky foundation.
When we build our lives upon Jesus Christ, we are blessed by God’s grace and mercy, and through Christ, we can endure all things. So build your life on the Lord!
Loving Lord, you bless us abundantly! Help us to see beyond the fluff and glitter and build our lives on Christ. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: The blessings come down as the prayers go up!
Christ is our sure foundation! Pastor Liz
