Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

October 8, 2025

Matthew 13:18-23

18 “Consider then the parable of the farmer. 19 Whenever people hear the word about the kingdom and don’t understand it, the evil one comes and carries off what was planted in their hearts. This is the seed that was sown on the path. 20 As for the seed that was spread on rocky ground, this refers to people who hear the word and immediately receive it joyfully. 21 Because they have no roots, they last for only a little while. When they experience distress or abuse because of the word, they immediately fall away. 22 As for the seed that was spread among thorny plants, this refers to those who hear the word, but the worries of this life and the false appeal of wealth choke the word, and it bears no fruit. 23 As for what was planted on good soil, this refers to those who hear and understand, and bear fruit and produce—in one case a yield of one hundred to one, in another case a yield of sixty to one, and in another case a yield of thirty to one.”

Good Morning! Blessed be the name of the Lord!

This morning, I am watching an interesting sky containing multiple layers and colors of clouds. The higher level seems to be standing its ground, while the lower level is being blown and moved by the wind. As I sit and ponder the parable of the farmer, I am listening intently for words of wisdom this morning.

The farmer expands our understanding of yesterday’s conversation regarding our fruitfulness. The lowest level of clouds is gradually fading away as they drift along the currents of air. Maybe these drifting clouds represent those whose faith is fleeting. They move away because they are not attached or founded to anything.

Again, we come to the need to nurture one another in our faith journey. I think of those who have a sudden ah-ha moment regarding God. The moment may come in a worship service, while standing atop a mountain, or even in line at the grocery store. If that moment is left to float away, then it is but a momentary glimmer. However, if that moment is allowed to produce roots and be nurtured, it can grow. The stronger the roots and the better the nurturing, the greater the fruit production.

How many times has a great thought popped into your head, and then just as suddenly as it came, it is gone? No matter how hard you try to find it, it seems to be lost for the ages. The good news is that God gives us unlimited glimpses to which we can hold and begin or renew our faith journeys.

Loving Lord, you bless us abundantly! Help us pay attention to the glimpses of love and kindness that you send to us. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: Look for what is true, good, and lovely!

Hold on to God! Pastor Liz
