Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

  October 14, 2024

Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who are struggling hard and carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. 29 Put on my yoke, and learn from me. I’m gentle and humble. And you will find rest for yourselves. 30 My yoke is easy to bear, and my burden is light.”

Good Morning! Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Sometimes, I take on more burdens than I can bear. It starts simply enough. Someone needs help, and I happily take on that task. After all, God calls us to help our neighbors and serve whenever or wherever we’re needed.

The problem arises when I agree to do or help more than I can possibly do. I forget to leave myself time to rest, and suddenly, I get out of sorts and struggle with even the simplest tasks. Next, my body starts to rebel, and I realize I need help.

When I’m in my right mind, I first go to God and pray about my situation, but sometimes I’m so tired I forget that first step. At those times, I need someone to point out my overcommitment issues so I can fall back into my routine and spend time with God. Sadly, I can be persistent and stubborn. In those times, I think the Holy Spirit begins to push and poke me until I admit my need for help.

When I finally turn to God, I find relief. His gentle guidance and comforting presence ease my burdens, and I am reminded that I am not alone in my struggles. This reassurance brings me comfort and peace, allowing me to continue with renewed strength.

Dear Lord, We are your children! We try to be everyone’s solution, but we can’t do it alone. Thank you for pulling us back to recognize our need for help.  Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: We find true rest and peace by releasing our burdens to God.

Lay your burden down! Pastor Liz
