Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

October 20, 2025

Isaiah 45:1-7

1 The LORD says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whom I have grasped by the strong hand, to conquer nations before him, disarming kings, and opening doors before him, so no gates will be shut: 2 I myself will go before you, and I will level mountains. I will shatter bronze doors; I will cut through iron bars. 3 I will give you hidden treasures of secret riches, so you will know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who calls you by name. 4 For the sake of my servant Jacob and Israel my chosen, I called you by name. I gave you an honored title, though you didn’t know me. 5 I am the LORD, and there is no other; besides me there is no God. I strengthen you though you don’t know me 6 so all will know, from the rising of the sun to its setting, that there is nothing apart from me. I am the LORD; there’s no other. 7 I form light and create darkness, make prosperity and create doom; I am the LORD, who does all these things.

Good Morning! In all things, God goes before us.

 I called you by name.

It is wonderful to be called by name. When someone goes to the trouble of knowing your name, you feel worthy and important. I recall a Principal at one of my schools who didn’t take the time to get to know our students by name. It was a small school, so it wasn’t that hard to do, but I guess he didn’t understand the importance of calling students by name. When necessary, he would call their names from a piece of paper, and it was apparent there was no connection between him and the student.

God, creator of everyone, knows and calls each of us by name because we are connected. God wants to join with us in a relationship where we share everything together.

How long do conversations last when you’re talking to your best friend? Most of us would say they last a long time because we want to share every detail of our triumphs and failures. We help and support one another. We cry and laugh together.

This is what God wants with us. An open relationship where everything is shared. God laughs and cries with us. God supports and helps us in our time of need, and God is our biggest cheerleader when we need a confidence boost.

Loving Lord, you bless us abundantly! When we feel small and insignificant, God calls us by name. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: God is listening and waiting to help us!

God calls us by name. Pastor Liz
