Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
November 8, 2023
Habakkuk 3:16-19
16 I hear, and my insides tremble. My lips quiver at the sound. Rottenness enters my bones. I tremble while I stand, while I wait for the day of distress to come against the people who attack us. 17 Though the fig tree doesn’t bloom, and there’s no produce on the vine; though the olive crop withers, and the fields don’t provide food; though the sheep are cut off from the pen, and there are no cattle in the stalls; 18 I will rejoice in the LORD. I will rejoice in the God of my deliverance. 19 The LORD God is my strength. He will set my feet like the deer. He will let me walk upon the heights.
Good Morning. God loves us forevermore!
Faith is believing that God is with you always. In today’s passage, God’s prophet, Habakkuk, is at “the end of his rope,” yet he still believes that God will deliver him from his desperation.
Many of us have faced times of great despair—those times when everything that could go wrong goes wrong. I am reminded of the widow in 1 Kings with only one portion of flour remaining. 1 Kings 17:12, “And she said, 'As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die.”
God sends Elijah to this woman in utter desperation to bring her the hope of a new day. Faith allows us to sustain our hope in our weakest moments. Knowing that God will not abandon us makes taking the next step, or even the next breath, possible.
Creator God, We love you! Without you, we can not survive. Our faith wavers, and you send someone to calm our storm. Thank you. In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Through God, we have all we need.
Accept God’s love! Pastor Liz
