Read Psalm 145:17-21
17 The LORD is righteous in all his ways, faithful in all his deeds. 18 The LORD is close to everyone who calls out to him, to all who call out to him sincerely. 19 God shows favor to those who honor him, listening to their cries for help and saving them. 20 The LORD protects all who love him, but he destroys every wicked person. 21 My mouth will proclaim the LORD’s praise, and every living thing will bless God’s holy name forever and always.
Good Morning! God shows favor on all who honor him.
Today I am so blessed to be back in Indiana to celebrate with my mother-in-law, Joyce Petry. Tomorrow she will be 100 years old. When I think of prayer warriors, she has to be at the top of my list. It is hard to fathom that when Lowell and I started dating she was a mere 47 years old. Who knew she still had over half of her life to live.
The Petry family opened their arms wide from the first time we gathered. In those early years, Grandma Petry, as she is called by so many, was always there to share her wisdom anytime we called. When we moved away from Indiana, she and Quentin were always ready to help when we were in need. Lowell had a special place in his heart for his mom. Each time we were able to make the long trek home, the first thing he would do was stop by the hospital where she worked to give her a hug. Nothing else mattered until they hugged.
When I read today’s passage, I immediately thought of Joyce who has served her Lord selflessly over the years. From her own premature birth, through seven healthy children, through the loss of infant, through the weddings and births of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, through the loss of Quentin, her husband of 72 years, and the loss of here three grown sons, she has been faithful to her Lord and Savior. Through the sunny days and through the storms, Grandma stands strong for she knows who she believes. For me and many others, Joyce has been there to help me on my journey.
I remember her asking Lowell why she was still here. Lowell would always smile and say, “Mom, God still has work for you to do here.“ she would respond with her smile reserved for special moments. God protects and favors those who honor him. Today, we celebrate God’s child, Joyce! Blessings abound!
Loving God, Thank You for loving us. Thank you for your servant, Joyce. She is such a wonderful example for all who she has met. Thank you. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: God loves and cares for me always.
Live for Jesus! Pastor Liz
