Morning Devotional 121321 Who Do You See in Your Rear View Mirror?

Liz’s Morning Devotional based upon Upper Room

December 13, 2021

Read 1 Corinthians 10:31-33--11:1

31 So, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, you should do it all for God’s glory. 32 Don’t offend either Jews or Greeks, or God’s church. 33 This is the same thing that I do. I please everyone in everything I do. I don’t look out for my own advantage, but I look out for many people so that they can be saved.

1 Follow my example, just like I follow Christ’s.

Good Morning! Follow Christ!

Giving directions has been the subject of many comedy skits! Comedians say things like, “do you know where the old gas station was? You do, well don’t turn there.” We laugh at the absurdity of the poor directions, but how do you do with giving and/or receiving directions?

First, think about a time when you have been asked to give directions to someone who is lost or doesn’t know the way? Then, think about a time when you are the one asking and trying to follow the directions that someone else gave to you. How comfortable are you that someone finds their location from the directions that you gave? Did you arrive at your destination when you followed the directions given to you?

The scriptures and prophecies, aka our roadmap, of the Old Testament, had been handed down for generations. At times, God’s children followed the map obediently, but other times made wrong turns and lost their way. When the children were hopelessly lost, God sent Jesus to model the way through his words and actions.

Roadmaps, even today’s GPS, are sometimes confusing to follow. It is easier to follow a person who already knows the way. Think of following a car ahead of you to your destination. How well this works is dependent upon the person driving the car in the lead. If the leader isn’t intentional about setting the path, the one who is following can get separated in traffic and get lost. Have you ever been the one in the lead car, and momentarily forgotten that another car was following you? I have! You frantically try to get back together as you slow down or pull off the highway.

As you think about leading others and being led, remember that Jesus will always provide specific directions and will never forget that you are following him. Amen! When you set your sights on Jesus, you will reach your destination safely. Even when you encounter detours and other obstacles, Jesus will lead you around or through the bumps along the way. As Christians, we are called to exhibit Christ for the world. Never lose sight of those who are following you!

Creator God, Thank You for loving us. Help us lead others to you by our example, as modeled by your Son. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: How am I leading others to Christ?

Lead with confidence! Pastor Liz
