Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
December 18, 2024
Matthew 5:13-16
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its saltiness, how will it become salty again? It’s good for nothing except to be thrown away and trampled under people’s feet. 14 You are the light of the world. A city on top of a hill can’t be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they put it on top of a lampstand, and it shines on all who are in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before people, so they can see the good things you do and praise your Father who is in heaven.
Good Morning! Let your light shine!
Turn on your heartlight
Let it shine wherever you go
Let it make a happy glow
For all the world to see
Turn on your heartlight
These are lyrics from a Neil Diamond tune for an 80’s movie, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. These words remind us that our light is generated in our hearts. God calls us to share this light so that others may find their way through the darkness to God.
John tells us God is light and that darkness is the absence of God. In our ever-growing secular world, there are so many who have not heard or do not know the glory of God. Little children are being raised with no knowledge of our creator.
God created each living being on this earth whether they acknowledge God or not. I know too many adults who believe that teaching their child to be a kind person and doing the right things is enough. Perhaps this works for a bit, but we all face challenges at some point, and God did not create us to face our challenges alone.
Part of our holiday celebrations is to light up our homes and yards. We need to use this idea to light up our hearts so that all the world may see our joy. It is a great day when someone asks, “How can you find joy in these awful times and I can share my story of faith.”
Loving Lord, We are your children! During this joyful season, remind us to keep our heartlights shining brightly for all the world to see. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Share Christ’s light and love with those whose hearts are heavy this season.
Turn on your heartlight! Pastor Liz
