Morning Devotional: The Five W's and the H

Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

October 8, 2022

Read Psalm 92:12-15

12 The righteous will spring up like a palm tree. They will grow strong like a cedar of Lebanon. 13 Those who have been replanted in the LORD’s house will spring up in the courtyards of our God. 14 They will bear fruit even when old and gray; they will remain lush and fresh 15 in order to proclaim: “The LORD is righteous. He’s my rock. There’s nothing unrighteous in him.”

Good morning! Jesus is the rock of our salvation!

Most people dread the thought of moving. There is the packing and unpacking, the sorting of the junk, and the actual physical labor of lifting our stuff. Even if you hire someone to do the lifting, you tend to cringe when your precious things are moved. Whether you move across the country or down the street, moving is a challenge.

As someone who is no stranger to moving, I feel that in addition to the physical aspects of moving, there are emotional and spiritual aspects as well. Think of when you leave your childhood home and try to pack your memories away. Memories have a way of not fitting into rigid packing boxes. As I type this, I see memories oozing through the creases as I try to tape the box shut. Perhaps the biggest emotional challenges are the fear and anxiety that permeate your whole being. The infamous five W’s and the H: Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How dance within us making us metaphorically shake.

Finally, there is the spiritual aspect. With everything that is going on, what happens to our time with God? If this move is the result of something unexpected in our lives, do we develop doubts about what God is doing in our lives? I believe that God is with us always and that when each time we are replanted, God will provide all that we need to grow into our new lives so that we can continue to bear fruit even when old and gray.

Gracious God, Thank You for loving us. We struggle with change, especially change that requires us to leave things behind. Thank you for carrying us in times of despair. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: Whether at my best or most vulnerable, God is always with me.
