Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
January 18, 2026
Psalm 46:1-7, 10
1 God is our refuge and strength, a help always near in times of great trouble. 2 That’s why we won’t be afraid when the world falls apart, when the mountains crumble into the center of the sea, 3 when its waters roar and rage, when the mountains shake because of its surging waves. Selah 4 There is a river whose streams gladden God’s city, the holiest dwelling of the Most High. 5 God is in that city. It will never crumble. God will help it when morning dawns. 6 Nations roar; kingdoms crumble. God utters his voice; the earth melts. 7 The LORD of heavenly forces is with us! The God of Jacob is our place of safety. Selah 10 “That’s enough! Now know that I am God! I am exalted among all nations; I am exalted throughout the world!”
Good Morning! Be still and know that I am God!
People react in different ways during an emergency. Some panic and metaphorical run around saying the sky is falling. Others are frozen in place unable to move or talk. Then there are those who remain calm, see what must be done, and take action.
In fairness, our personal connection to the emergency might affect our reaction. Even trained responders like firefighters and ER doctors, become too personally invested when the emergency involves their family or friends.
Psalm 46:10 Be still and know that I am God is one of my support verses in times of trouble. I purposely have visible reminders that simply say Be Still. When I feel anxiety building within me, I read Be Still, and I remember that God is with me. My fears abate and I am able to react with calmness instead of panic.
I smile when I read the CEB translation with “That’s enough!” instead of “Be still!” I have certainly had experiences where my simple reminders weren’t enough, and I needed to be shaken or shocked into remembering that God is with me.
In our times of trouble, God is with us. Sometimes we just need to be still and seek God’s presence.
Redeeming Lord, you bless us abundantly! Help us remember that all we have to do is turn to you and listen. Thank you. We love you. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.
Thought for the day: God’s peaceful presence can help us in moments of anxiety.
Turn to God when you feel troubled! Pastor Liz
