Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

  January 20, 2025

Matthew 6:19-21

19 “Stop collecting treasures for your own benefit on earth, where moth and rust eat them and where thieves break in and steal them. 20 Instead, collect treasures for yourselves in heaven, where moth and rust don’t eat them and where thieves don’t break in and steal them. 21 Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Good Morning. Rejoice! Again, I say rejoice!

What are our treasures? One of the joys of teaching young children was being invited to share special moments with them. They would find treasures everywhere they looked. The weeds growing in the grass or a random pebble resting in the dirt is a treasure to expectant eyes. Children openly share their treasures with others. I remember a young girl handing clover buds to all the teachers each afternoon as we awaited her parent’s arrival. I don’t think that she ever kept any for herself. She picked them, and then gave them all away.

This is in stark contrast to how adults manage their treasures. First, we would never be bothered with collecting worthless weeds or pebbles. Second, whatever treasures we are gathering belong to us, and we are less likely to share them with others joyfully, and even if we did, we would definitely keep some for ourselves.

Perhaps, we should focus on what we are classifying as treasures. Do we collect only things that will benefit us and will be the envy of others? Thieves will break in and steal earthly treasures like gold, jewelry, and money, but I’ve never heard of a thief stealing kindness, love, or joy. Likewise, moths and rust can not eat away at our heavenly treasures.

There is one more thing to consider. These heavenly treasures become more valuable the more they are shared. Like the young girl who lavishly shared the clover buds with all who would accept them, when we share kindness, love, and joy in grows. The more we share, the more it grows.

Loving Lord, Maker of all things! We are distracted by glittery things. Help us look inwardly and find the treasures that matter. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: Share your treasures and watch them grow!

Joyfully give to others! Pastor Liz
