Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
January 31, 2023
Read Matthew 4:18-22
18 As Jesus walked alongside the Galilee Sea, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew, throwing fishing nets into the sea, because they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” he said, “and I’ll show you how to fish for people.” 20 Right away, they left their nets and followed him. 21 Continuing on, he saw another set of brothers, James the son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with Zebedee their father repairing their nets. Jesus called them and 22 immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Good Morning, Jesus says, “Come, follow me!”
Have you ever had a mentor or have you worked as an apprentice? Maybe as a teen or as you started a new job, you had someone to shadow, to whom you could go whenever you had questions, and who taught you everything you needed to know. You build a relationship with this person and trust that they have your best interest in their heart. Sometimes, even years later, we reach out to a former mentor to share and glean additional knowledge.
Jesus called the disciples and they learned as they followed him throughout his ministry. They could ask questions and he would answer. He would guide them through their times of uncertainty. He even prepared them for his death. He taught them everything they needed to know so that they might preach and heal in His name.
Through the death and resurrection of Jesus, we too gained a mentor to lead us on our journey. We are called to praise God, study scripture, pray, and serve others. We have Christ’s example to follow as we embark on our walk of faith. Even when our road seems rocky and has unexpected twists and turns, the light of Jesus shines brightly so that we do not lose our way.
Loving God, Thank You for being with us. Thy Word lights our path so that we may find our way home. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Jesus guides my way when I prayerfully trust his guidance.
Follow Jesus! Pastor Liz
