Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
January 30, 2026
Luke 22:24-30
24 An argument broke out among the disciples over which one of them should be regarded as the greatest. 25 But Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles rule over their subjects, and those in authority over them are called ‘friends of the people.’ 26 But that’s not the way it will be with you. Instead, the greatest among you must become like a person of lower status and the leader like a servant. 27 So which one is greater, the one who is seated at the table or the one who serves at the table? Isn’t it the one who is seated at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. 28 “You are the ones who have continued with me in my trials. 29 And I confer royal power on you just as my Father granted royal power to me. 30 Thus you will eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones overseeing the twelve tribes of Israel.
Good Morning! Jesus came to serve!
Make me a servant, humble and meek!
Lord, let me lift up those who are weak.
And may the prayer of my heart always be:
make me a servant, make me a servant,
make me a servant, today.
Missio Dei is a Latin theological term meaning "Mission of God" or "the sending of God," referring to the belief that mission is not just an activity of the church, but an attribute of God Himself. It signifies that God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) is actively working to redeem, reconcile, and restore all of creation.
Jesus came to teach us how to actively serve one another. We, as God’s children, are invited to join in God’s divine mission, bringing God's kingdom into daily life—work, home, and community.
God’s mission seems contrary to the worldly goals of seeking power and prestige. We are called to aspire to be servants, to lift and support those who are weak, to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to care for the sick and poor.
True servants put the needs of others before themselves, just as Jesus gave his life to save us from our sinful ways. In our homes, churches, businesses, community, and country, we are to serve one another.
Redeeming Lord, you bless us abundantly! Help us humble ourselves and joyfully serve one another. Thank you. We love you. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.
Thought for the day: Follow the example of Jesus and serve others.
Lord, make me your servant! Pastor Liz
