Matthew 18:10, 12-14

10 “Be careful that you don’t look down on one of these little ones. I say to you that their angels in heaven are always looking into the face of my Father who is in heaven. 12 What do you think? If someone had one hundred sheep and one of them wandered off, wouldn’t he leave the ninety-nine on the hillsides and go in search for the one that wandered off? 13 If he finds it, I assure you that he is happier about having that one sheep than about the ninety-nine who didn’t wander off. 14 In the same way, my Father who is in heaven doesn’t want to lose one of these little ones.

Good Morning. I once was lost, but now I am found!

In the eyes of our Lord, we each are valued. What if the one who is lost is the group's natural leader? It makes sense to go and find this important one. What if the one who is lost is the weakest or smallest? We are empathetic that this one could not survive without help, so we rescue this one. Rescuing those two outliers makes sense.

So, now I ask you, what about the other 98? The lost one is not the leader, nor is it the weakest. The remaining 98 are likely similar in size and strength. What if one of the ordinary ones is the lost one? In the parable, Jesus doesn’t specify which one is lost; he just needs to go and find it.

Thanks be to God because each of us is one of the multitude of ordinary sheep who get lost at times. All are precious in his sight! God has set us apart and made us heirs before we are born. Isaiah 43:4 says, "Since you were precious in my sight, you have been honored, and I have loved you; therefore I will give men in exchange for you, and peoples in exchange for your life.

Jesus continues to rejoice when he finds each one who is lost, even if they have been lost before. How many chances do we get? As many as it takes right up to the day of our redemption.

Loving Lord, Maker of all things! You love us! We see ourselves as ordinary, but you see us as special. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: Jesus loves the little children (us) of the world!

Jesus seeks us when we are lost! Pastor Liz
