Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

  Feb. 5, 2025

Luke 6:32-36

32 “If you love those who love you, why should you be commended? Even sinners love those who love them. 33 If you do good to those who do good to you, why should you be commended? Even sinners do that. 34 If you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, why should you be commended? Even sinners lend to sinners expecting to be paid back in full. 35 Instead, love your enemies, do good, and lend expecting nothing in return. If you do, you will have a great reward. You will be acting the way children of the Most High act, for he is kind to ungrateful and wicked people. 36 Be compassionate just as your Father is compassionate.

Good Morning. Do Good, Do No Harm, and Stay in Love with God!

When we do something nice for someone, what is our motivation? Do we hope to receive recognition? How do we feel when our act of kindness seems to go unnoticed?

These are questions that are difficult for us to answer honestly! I’m reminded of the passage in Matthew 6:16-18, where Jesus reminds us, Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Jesus came to teach us a new way to live and love one another. We are not to boast and brag about what we do. The Bible warns us about the dangers of pride. When we elevate ourselves, we set ourselves on a path that leads to ruin. Humility, on the other hand, brings us closer to God’s grace.

35 Instead, love your enemies, do good, and lend expecting nothing in return.

Go into the world treating all as your equals and share God’s unconditional love.

Loving Lord, Maker of all things! You love us! We sometimes think too highly of ourselves and our accomplishments. Help us follow Jesus’ example to serve all God’s children humbly.  Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: Follow the example of Jesus as you go out today!

Humbly serve all God’s children! Pastor Liz
