Liz’s Morning Devotional based upon Upper Room

February 20, 2022

Read Luke 1:46-55

46 Mary said, “With all my heart I glorify the Lord! 47 In the depths of who I am I rejoice in God my savior. 48 He has looked with favor on the low status of his servant. Look! From now on, everyone will consider me highly favored 49 because the mighty one has done great things for me. Holy is his name. 50 He shows mercy to everyone, from one generation to the next, who honors him as God. 51 He has shown strength with his arm. He has scattered those with arrogant thoughts and proud inclinations. 52 He has pulled the powerful down from their thrones and lifted up the lowly. 53 He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty-handed. 54 He has come to the aid of his servant Israel, remembering his mercy, 55 just as he promised to our ancestors, to Abraham and to Abraham’s descendants forever.”

Good Morning! Through Christ, we can do all things!

46 Mary said, “With all my heart I glorify the Lord! These beautiful words of Mary are spoken to Elizabeth, her cousin. Mary has gone to visit Elizabeth after the angel Gabriel shares with Mary that she will be the mother of Christ. When Gabriel speaks, Mary is frightened by what the angel is saying and by what God has asked of her. She is a lowly servant, who is engaged to be married. What would others think when she was suddenly expecting a baby.

Many of us can certainly empathize with Mary regarding the impending pregnancy and birth of a child, but she alone can carry the burden of knowing the baby inside her is the Son of God. Young couples often question when the time is right to begin a family. Mary was young and poor which for our time seems like a terrible time to have a baby.

Mary accepted her calling with the grace and humility that you would not expect to find in someone so young. When God called Mary, she knew she was not qualified for such a task, but God assured her and comforted her as she accepted her calling. God provided her with all the strength that she needed because she gave herself to God, trusted God, and accepted that God was in control.

Mary, through her life as the mother of Jesus, teaches us by her example how to follow God without question as to what comes next.

Loving God, Thank You for loving us. Throughout the Scriptures, we read of those who put their trust in you. May we work to allow the Holy Spirit within us to transform us so that we can turn our lives over to you for your work. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: With God, I can walk confidently into the unknown.
