Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

February 21, 2026

Deuteronomy 34:9-12

9 Joshua, Nun’s son, was filled with wisdom because Moses had placed his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to Joshua, and they did exactly what the LORD commanded Moses. 10 No prophet like Moses has yet emerged in Israel; Moses knew the LORD face-to-face! 11 That’s not even to mention all those signs and wonders that the LORD sent Moses to do in Egypt—to Pharaoh, to all his servants, and to his entire land 12 as well as all the extraordinary power that Moses displayed before Israel’s own eyes!

Good Morning! Great is the Lord, our God!

When we study Moses, we read of all the extraordinary things that he did. I believe that he would be the first to admit that none of these things happened because of anything he had or did. Every miracle, word of wisdom, and the saving of the Israelites was the work of God. Moses was simply the vessel through which God acted.

By God’s grace, Moses saved and led the Israelites to the promised land. Moses knew his limitations and when called, Moses suggested that maybe Joshua would be a better choice because he, Moses, was not a good public speaker.

Exodus 4:10“Please, Lord,” Moses replied, “I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since You have spoken to Your servant, for I am slow of speech and tongue.” 11And the LORD said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Or who makes the mute or the deaf, the sighted or the blind? Is it not I, the LORD?”

Praise be to God who takes us, his ordinary children, and gives us the gifts and guidance to do extraordinary things in the Holy Name of Christ, our Lord and Savior. Just as God didn’t accept Moses’ excuse, God calls us until we answer, “Yes, Lord! I am your humble servant.”

God of Wisdom, you bless us abundantly! Only you know what we can do when we humble ourselves and give you control. Thank you. We love you. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.

Thought for the day: God uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things.
