Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

  March 4, 2025

Psalm 56:1-4

1 God, have mercy on me because I’m being trampled. All day long the enemy oppresses me. 2 My attackers trample me all day long because I have so many enemies. Exalted one, 3 whenever I’m afraid, I put my trust in you 4 in God, whose word I praise. I trust in God; I won’t be afraid. What can mere flesh do to me?

Good Morning. Fear not; God is with us!

Most of us have had moments when we felt overwhelmed with fear. These times often begin with something small, but the longer we think about it, the bigger it grows. Suddenly, we begin concocting all of the worst-case scenarios: the what-ifs.

Our anxiety builds the longer we wait or the fewer facts we have. It’s as if our brain needs to fill in the gaps of the narrative’s missing pieces. Think of a time when you were waiting for a family member to return home. The expected arrival time comes and goes. We start to think of possible reasons for the delay: problems at work, car troubles, or health problems.

The longer the delay, the more basic ideas fester and grow into things like car accidents, heart attacks, and kidnappings. I remember getting ready to check the hospital when my family member walked through the door unharmed.

When we let fear grow, it can consume us. God is waiting to take our fears from us when we place our trust in him. Instead of imagining disaster, calm your fears by praying and talking with God.

Loving Lord, Maker of all things! You love us! Help us overcome our fear when we share our testimonies with others. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: We can lean on God’s love when fear surrounds us.
