Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

  March 5, 2025

Matthew 7:24-27

24 “Everybody who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise builder who built a house on bedrock. 25 The rain fell, the floods came, and the wind blew and beat against that house. It didn’t fall because it was firmly set on bedrock. 26 But everybody who hears these words of mine and doesn’t put them into practice will be like a fool who built a house on sand. 27 The rain fell, the floods came, and the wind blew and beat against that house. It fell and was completely destroyed.”

Good Morning. Love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength!

Today’s passage has me singing the VBS song “The Wise Man Built His House upon a Rock.” Of course, it also brings to mind the story of the Three Little Pigs. Both of these examples should make us stop and ask ourselves, “Why would we ignore the words that will save us?”

We, God’s children, seem to have many enemies, the worst of which is ourselves. We can become so entrenched in our thoughts and ways that we cannot hear or see God’s way. When life constantly beats us down, we develop hardened hearts and minds. Instead of turning to God, we turn away from our true source of love and grace.

We lock ourselves into a dark closet and sit in despair because we see no way out. The Good News is that God is always available to lead us through our challenges. No matter how far we fall or how long our departure, God is ready to break down our walls of isolation, soften our hearts and minds, and welcome us home. All we have to do is call out, “I’m ready, Lord.”

Loving Lord, Maker of all things! You love us! We are stubborn and try to do things on our own. Thank you for holding the safety net that catches us when we fall. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: God loves us even when we turn away.

Jesus says, “Come unto me, and I will give you rest.” Pastor Liz
