Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

Ecclesiastes 9:7-12
7 Go, eat your food joyfully and drink your wine happily because God has already accepted what you do. 8 Let your garments always be white; don’t run short of oil for your head. 9 Enjoy life with your dearly loved spouse all the days of your pointless life that God gives you under the sun—all the days of your pointless life!—because that’s your part to play in this life and in your hard work under the sun. 10 Whatever you are capable of doing, do with all your might because there’s no work, thought, knowledge, or wisdom in the grave, which is where you are headed. 11 I also observed under the sun that the race doesn’t always go to the swift, nor the battle to the mighty, nor food to the wise, nor wealth to the intelligent, nor favor to the knowledgeable, because accidents can happen to anyone. 12 People most definitely don’t know when their time will come. Like fish tragically caught in a net or like birds trapped in a snare, so are human beings caught in a time of tragedy that suddenly falls to them.
Good Morning! Make good use of the time we are given.
When I think of Ecclesiastes, I think of Chapter 3. For everything, there is a season. This Chapter gave me some challenges this morning. King Solomon is the assumed author of Ecclesiastes, and he is looking back over his life—the good and the bad.
This passage again reminds us to consider the passage of time. We are to use the time that we have to glorify God. Accumulating earthly treasures is of no value when we die. Only our heavenly treasures travel with us into eternity.
Because we do not know when our time on earth will end, we must not put off until tomorrow what we could/should do today. We should use our extra time to joyfully serve God.
Gracious God, Thank you for this beautiful gift of life. We often waste our time gathering earthly treasures. Help us seek new ways to serve you. We thank you! In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Unscheduled hours open up opportunities to serve God.
Spend time serving God! Pastor Liz
