Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
April 16, 2026
Luke 8:22-26
22 One day Jesus and his disciples boarded a boat. He said to them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the lake.” So they set sail. 23 While they were sailing, he fell asleep. Gale-force winds swept down on the lake. The boat was filling up with water and they were in danger. 24 So they went and woke Jesus, shouting, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” But he got up and gave orders to the wind and the violent waves. The storm died down and it was calm. 25 He said to his disciples, “Where is your faith?” Filled with awe and wonder, they said to each other, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him!”
Good Morning! Where is your faith?
Imagine that you are in the boat with Jesus and the disciples. Are you sleeping peacefully, or are you engaged in major panic and despair?
As humans, we have many ways that we respond to danger. Some become very calm and rational, while others run around like chickens with their heads cut off. Some get quiet while others are shouting or screaming.
I’m reminded of a story about John Wesley as he was crossing the Atlantic Ocean and the ship he was on sailed into some turbulent seas. He admitted his concern and fear, but he was in awe of a group of Moravians who prayed and sang hymns to God with no visible concern for their safety.
Upon questioning them, he was told they were not afraid because they believed God would be with them and guide them in their times of trial. God doesn’t promise an easy life, but God promises to be with us always.
God of Wisdom, you bless us abundantly! We are weak. Thank you for sharing your love and strength in our times of greatest need. Thank you. We love you. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.
Thought for the day: We can have peace in our hearts because God is with us in the storm.
When the storms of life are raging, God is with us! Pastor Liz
