Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

May 3, 2026

Habakkuk 3:16-19

16 I hear and my insides tremble. My lips quiver at the sound. Rottenness enters my bones. I tremble while I stand, while I wait for the day of distress to come against the people who attack us. 17 Though the fig tree doesn’t bloom, and there’s no produce on the vine; though the olive crop withers, and the fields don’t provide food; though the sheep are cut off from the pen, and there are no cattle in the stalls; 18 I will rejoice in the LORD. I will rejoice in the God of my deliverance. 19 The LORD God is my strength. He will set my feet like the deer. He will let me walk upon the heights.

Good Morning! The Lord God is our strength!

It seems that Habakkuk is describing intense fear in verses 16-17, but when we look at the context of these words, I would more aptly describe the prophet’s words as extreme awe in God’s mercy. These verses are near the end of a prayer through which Habakkuk regails the listener with God’s power. Beginning in verse 16, we see his realization that, despite everything happening, God will save us.

Many times during our lives, we will feel overwhelmed, weary, and fearful. The key to overcoming such challenges is to build our faith in God through prayer, scripture, worship, and fellowship with the community of faith. Our strength comes from God, and no matter how bleak things may appear, God sent Jesus to overcome the world, not with a sword, but with a message of love.

Instead of cowering in a corner, we are called to stand tall, knowing that God will deliver us from adversity. “He will set my feet like the deer. He will let me walk upon the heights.”

God of Wisdom, you bless us abundantly! O Lord, we are weak, but you are strong. We rejoice in your might and mercy. Thank you. We love you. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.

Thought for the day: Give thanks to God in all things!

Rejoice! God is merciful and loving!  Pastor Liz
