Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

May 10, 2026

1 John 3:1-3

1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us in that we should be called God’s children, and that is what we are! Because the world didn’t recognize him, it doesn’t recognize us. 2 Dear friends, now we are God’s children, and it hasn’t yet appeared what we will be. We know that when he appears we will be like him because we’ll see him as he is. 3 And all who have this hope in him purify themselves even as he is pure.

Good Morning! We are God’s children!

All of us were born to a mother. When God sent his son to earth, Mary was chosen to be Jesus’ mother. Mary, a young, ordinary girl, was given great responsibility.

Children are challenging to raise. God creates amazing creatures who are blessed with curiosity, love, stubbornness, independence, and passion. All of these come together to allow a child to learn and grow into the being that God created. Likewise, all of these traits converge to cause those who try to care for these children of God challenges.

From a young age, children develop this need to do things without the help or support of a loving adult who wants to direct them. “I can do it myself” becomes the mantra of children as they stumble their way to adulthood.

I imagine God waiting for us to ask for help. The very traits that allow us to develop also generate the possibility of danger and failure. As adults, we wish we could spare our children the challenges, but we must struggle so we can grow. It is never easy to admit that we need help.

By God’s grace, who we are to be will be revealed in God’s time.

God of Wisdom, you bless us abundantly! We can be the source of great love, but also great struggles. Thank you for loving us despite our human flaws. Thank you. We love you. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.

Thought for the day: We are beloved children of God!

God unconditionally loves us!  Pastor Liz
