Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

May 13, 2022

Read Luke 10:1-12

1 After these things, the Lord commissioned seventy-two others and sent them on ahead in pairs to every city and place he was about to go. 2 He said to them, “The harvest is bigger than you can imagine, but there are few workers. Therefore, plead with the Lord of the harvest to send out workers for his harvest. 3 Go! Be warned, though, that I’m sending you out as lambs among wolves. 4 Carry no wallet, no bag, and no sandals. Don’t even greet anyone along the way. 5 Whenever you enter a house, first say, ‘May peace be on this house.’ 6 If anyone there shares God’s peace, then your peace will rest on that person. If not, your blessing will return to you. 7 Remain in this house, eating and drinking whatever they set before you, for workers deserve their pay. Don’t move from house to house. 8 Whenever you enter a city and its people welcome you, eat what they set before you. 9 Heal the sick who are there, and say to them, ‘God’s kingdom has come upon you.’ 10 Whenever you enter a city and the people don’t welcome you, go out into the streets and say, 11 ‘As a complaint against you, we brush off the dust of your city that has collected on our feet. But know this: God’s kingdom has come to you.’ 12 I assure you that Sodom will be better off on Judgment Day than that city.

Good Morning, Go and make disciples of all the world.

Many are called, but few will answer. Christ calls us to go into the world to gather together all who will listen to follow Him. As we journey on our path, we will be tempted and distracted by the ways of others. Just as Jesus tells His disciples, we should not burden ourselves with any baggage, but that we should rely upon the kindness of others who will provide for our physical needs.

As disciples, we are to pray, heal, and teach any who are ready for the Good News. When our story is not welcomed, we are to leave and seek those who want to hear and be saved.

We are blessed that in this country we are relatively safe to share the Word, but there are places around the world where those who speak of Christ are putting their lives at risk. During each week’s service, I bless the missionaries who have been called to this beautiful, but often dangerous field of mission.

How can we serve and fulfill the Great Commission to go and make disciples? First, we must establish our own relationship with God through daily prayer and meditation. Next, we must clothe ourselves with the faith, hope, and mercy of God. Finally, we must let the light of God shine through us each step of our walk of faith. When we step out in true faith and trust God, we will begin the work of gathering lost souls.

Loving and Gracious God, Thank You for loving us. May we be strong in our faith as we work to serve You. We promise to feed Your sheep. Thank You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: Following Christ is not easy, but the Spirit always accompanies us.

Share Christ! Pastor Liz
