Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

May 16, 2026

Haggai 1:3-6

3 Then the LORD’s word came through Haggai the prophet: 4 Is it time for you to dwell in your own paneled houses while this house lies in ruins? 5 So now, this is what the LORD of heavenly forces says: Take your ways to heart. 6 You have sown much, but it has brought little. You eat, but there’s not enough to satisfy. You drink, but not enough to get drunk. There is clothing, but not enough to keep warm. Anyone earning wages puts those wages into a bag with holes.

Good Morning! Look to God for direction!

Remember: you can’t remove the water from a sinking boat with holes.

Until all work together, the boat and all in it will sink.

Haggai is speaking to the Israelites following their exile and return to Jerusalem. God uses Haggai to help them accept the priorities. Each of them is working in isolation to meet their own needs. God wants us to work together to meet the spiritual needs of all. Without a strong foundation, the why, we will continue to struggle and fall into despair with each challenge that happens.

When we have our “why” in place, then we can work through our problems by using the strength of the Holy Spirit to help us persevere. On our own, there will never be enough food, drink, or even buckets to sustain us, but with God we will be abundantly filled.

God of Love, you bless us abundantly! We become fixated on our own situation, and fail to see what is happening around us. Open our eyes, hearts, and minds to serve you. Thank you. We love you. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.

Thought for the day: God blesses those who build their lives around Jesus.

Serve one another!  Pastor Liz
