Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
May 26, 2022
Read Psalm 37:1-6
1 Don’t get upset over evildoers; don’t be jealous of those who do wrong, 2 because they will fade fast, like grass; they will wither like green vegetables. 3 Trust the LORD and do good; live in the land, and farm faithfulness. 4 Enjoy the LORD, and he will give what your heart asks. 5 Commit your way to the LORD! Trust him! He will act 6 and will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, your justice like high noon.
Good Morning, Seek ye first the kingdom of God!
We live in a very noisy world full of manmade sounds. We also are blessed with the amazing sounds of nature. As a musician, I engage in adding to the sounds of life on a regular basis. One of my favorite organ books is titled, Pipe Dusters, which implies you will rattle out any dust that might have gathered in the pipes. Despite my love of music and the sounds of nature, I have a hard time with those repetitive sounds like buzzers and alarms.
One time, I completed a class to help us learn to identify triggers for different types of behaviors in our students. As a part of the class, the participants were asked to complete some surveys. My survey indicated that noise was a trigger for me. Hmmm! I suddenly had a better understanding of why those beeps and buzzing sounds raised my anxiety level when I’m in a crowd of people. I am working to focus more intently on God when I feel the anxiety from the noise, so that I may clear my head and find the peace of God.
Sound is just one of the distractors that hinder our relationship with God. For others, you might have visual distractions, or even touching can trigger some. David reminds us that we must look past all of our distractions and focus on God. In good times and in bad times, God is with us. God is waiting to provide for all who commit themselves to follow our Lord.
Loving and Gracious God, Thank You for loving us. Amid the distractions, you are always with us to provide us with comfort and peace. Thank you for always being with us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Amid the distractions, I will focus my attention on God.
Look to God! Pastor Liz
